UCM Monitors: Instanbul vs Vienna

Post by NiciusMax »

Since the Monitor are out on preorder, I'm starting to consider getting a single blister of the UCM ones.

Now the question becomes, which type do I build.

Naturally, I tend to gravitate towards BTL's since I'm in a PHR heavy enviroment. So the Vienna has a lot of alure, especially with the Aegis helping out vs all those pesky PHR bombers.

But what of the Istanbul? I like its huge scan range, the multinpurpose gun but am a bit held back by the slow speed.

Anybody has any experience with either type? Especially vs PHR?

I think the confusion is from the fact that they're two different ships, just built on the same hull.

The Vienna is an Escort - probably best to think of it as a variant of the Jakarta that trades out some Aegis value for a Mamba laser and more CAW. The big difference is its speed, so its definitely something you want to use as the Light squadron in a Flag Battlegroup, unless you're doing a double Battleship group there. They don't really have the speed to keep up with Battlecruisers and Cruisers.

The Istanbul, on the other hand, is a Monitor, which, in naval parlance, basically means "small ship with Big Gun". And they're not kidding on the Big part - the only other place a 9000 caliber gun is found is on a UCM Dreadnought. The big advantage with this one is that its gun can be used in ranged combat, or as a bombardment weapon. Although whether it will replace the Madrid or Tokyo is debatable - you get more dice with the Madrid, but more damage per hit with the Istanbul. On average rolls, a 79pt Madrid will do 4 pts of damage, whilst 84pts of Istanbuls will do 5.3.

Milage may vary, I guess.

Yeah, I'm starting to see the downsides of the Vienna. It does not have the speed to keep up with the larger BTL ships and in a flag group ot might be wasted. Not sure if I'd replace jakartas with Vienna's in that case.

The Istanbul seems to offer a lot if utility. Not so sure about its bombardment role due to the slow speed, but three of them do pack a lot of massdriver firepower for very few points

As I posted elsewhere, Istanbuls could help out a San Fran. Defend it, and help clear the landing zone.

Yeah I'm leaning a bit towards the Instanbul right now. I think given the utility, high scan range and lower cost and Istanbul might not be that bad of frigate.

The idea of a BTL frigatr is still compelling though..

That is interesting and might push me more towards Vienna's. I do like BTLs
